Marriage Philosophy and Overview
“Marriage is a gift God has given to all humankind for the well being of the entire human family. Marriage is a civil contract between a woman and a man. For Christians marriage is a covenant through which a man and a woman are called to live out together before God their lives of discipleship. In a service of Christian marriage a lifelong commitment is made by a woman and a man to each other, publicly witnessed and acknowledged by the community of faith.” (Directory of Worship, Presbyterian Church USA)
All aspects of a wedding ceremony at First Presbyterian Church will reflect the religious nature of Christian marriage. One of the pastors on our staff, assigned on a rotating basis, will officiate at every wedding. Outside pastors are not permitted. The pastor will plan the service in consultation with the bride and groom and with the director of music ministries. Pre-marriage conferences will be scheduled with the officiating pastor.
Wedding Arrangements
Members of First Presbyterian Church and others interested in being married at First Church are invited to contact the church office (503-228-7331) and make the following arrangements:
1. Speak with the Facilities Administrator to complete a Wedding Reservation Request Form.
2. Pending availability, a temporary hold will be placed upon the date and time you have requested. The date requested will not be confirmed until after you have met with one of the pastors, he or she has agreed to perform the ceremony, and you have paid your required deposits.
3. After meeting with a pastor, a nonrefundable deposit of one-third of the total fee must be paid within seven days, as well as a security deposit of $300. (The security deposit will be refunded after the wedding provided no damage is incurred and vendors follow prescribed guidelines.)
