COVID-19 Update from Pastor Audrey

Grace and peace to you,

I will lift up my eyes unto the hills; from whence does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth…

In these days of so much change, we hold fast to our faith to strengthen and sustain us. You all are much in my thoughts, and I’m encouraged in hearing how you are faring in these times of staying home.

I want to update you on some of the things happening at church:

On Wednesday, the church governing board, the Session, met in a Zoom virtual meeting to discuss a number of important issues.

Here are the key decisions from that meeting:

  • All worship services during the month of April will be livestreamed only, and we will continue to worship by streaming “until the way be clear.”
  • They appointed an Administrative Commission of Session to handle urgent decisions related to worship, facilities, staffing, and finances during this season.
  • The downtown church staff will be paid during the month of April, being asked to adapt their work to online and other resources where possible. The Session felt it was important to care for our staff during this time, and it is your ongoing generosity that allows this to happen. You can see below ways to continue your giving.

Staff are complying with Governor Kate Brown’s executive ruling regarding workers who can do so to work from home. The church phone and emails are being answered by staff remotely.

Our worship by livestreaming will continue, with a few worship leaders spread out appropriately in the sanctuary for the time of the livestream.

Open Circle and the Youth Group and even the (beer) Friday fellowship group will be meeting by Zoom conferencing in the coming week. Even those for whom technology is not a first language are enjoying the chance to see familiar faces as we “gather” in this way. Staff are sharing devotionals on the church’s Facebook page, and others from the church are connecting by the church’s Instagram page. Deacons, pastors, and members of Open Circle are checking in with church members by phone.

We are drawing on the assurances of our faith that God will sustain us through all things and at all times. While we cannot be together physically, we are working to stay in contact with you in creative ways.

Please watch for updates to programming and worship here at firstpresportland.org, our Facebook page, and our e-mail list for updates.

Please join us in prayer for those most directly affected by this outbreak, and for those who seek to care for and to comfort those affected. We remember as well those who are facing other illness and surgery, worry and loss in these days. In all that changes, we draw strength from remembering,

God is refuge and our strength.

Wishing you strength sufficient for each day,

Audrey
