Advocacy & Social Justice

First Presbyterian is a congregation that advances the well-being and dignity of all people, works toward a just and equitable society, and cares for all creation.

We seek to engage with advocacy and social justice issues through forums, education classes, and special events, within the church, the wider faith community, and other organizations promoting social, economic, and ecological justice and peace.

FPC’s Theological Background for Social Justice

At its meeting last February, our church governing body, the Session approved a Theological Background document for the church’s involvement in social justice ministries, as part of our broader mission to follow Christ’s command that we love our neighbors. You can read that statement here.

Session Statement on Refugees

The church’s Session, its governing body, may occasionally issue statements on issues of general concern.  These statements express the Session’s understanding of what our faith calls us to do and say. The Session addresses its statements to the congregation and to others for consideration. Click here to read Session’s statement on refugees.

We are a diverse congregation, and individual members may not agree with part or all of a given Session statement.  Presbyterians believe that God alone is the Lord of the conscience.
