A Pastoral Letter from Brian Heron, Presbyter

Dear Members of the Presbytery of the Cascades, Like many of you in active ministry, I had planned one message for today only to realize that the world had shifted over the weekend. It is hard to believe that a message meant to provide resources to help our congregations negotiate through the coronavirus pandemic suddenly felt incidental. But that is the reality of our current American context. A virus just as deadly as the coronavirus seems to be sweeping across our nation right now. America’s deep stain of structural racism is impossible to ignore. The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of police officers and the response is just the most recent and obvious sign that racism is deeply imbedded in America’s DNA. While the nation tries to share equally the burden of the coronavirus African Americans [...]

Regathering Plan Update

Update to Regathering Plan Early in the pandemic, our Session (church governing board of Elders) appointed a re-opening task group to set criteria for when we could safely re-gather.  They have set strict criteria of a 99% chance that those attending worship would not encounter a COVID-positive person. Given concerning statistics recently about the virus rising in Multnomah County, we regret the need to delay our re-opening until mid-May, to allow a safer re-gathering. The new proposed dates are: Church Office re-opening Tuesday-Thursday from May 4 Worship re-opening by reservation; masked and distanced for congregants from May 16 Please be in touch with any questions and thanks for your understanding and flexibility as we continue to monitor the virus season, and for your prayers for our eventual and long-awaited re-gathering! ************************************************************************************************************ Dear friends, During these days amid all the [...]

Resources in Response to the Killing of George Floyd

Please scroll down for other resources, including those from our Presbytery and denomination. Dear friends, In recent days, the tumultuous impacts of the coronavirus have left a sense that the usual certainties and patterns of life have undergone a shaking of the foundations.  This has been compounded by an appalling act of violence in the killing of George Floyd, and the many protests that have happened in its wake, as well as the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.  Though we have seen over the years too many of these killings, there was something uniquely chilling in the image of a man’s knee on another’s neck, something that echoed the years and even centuries of oppression, bereft of any sense of common humanity. W.E.B. DuBois, an American sociologist and the first African-American to earn a Harvard doctorate, [...]
