Childcare for All Ages – 9 am
From September to May, we have two volunteers in Room 203 for childcare and a lesson on that Sunday’s lectionary Scripture passages, which is open to children of all ages (including infants) from 9 am – 10:15 am. If you want to attend a morning Adult Education offering, attend choir practice, or any other morning event, this is a great resource for you!
Nursery Services are provided for children under 3 years old, from 10:15 - 11:30 am in the Nursery, room 100.
Children First Attend Worship Service
Children are invited forward during the worship service for the children’s moment, which highlights their presence in the congregation and offers them an age-appropriate lesson on that Sunday’s sermon.
Children’s Music and Sunday School
After the children’s moment, children in Pre-K through 5th Grade are welcome to leave the Sanctuary for Children’s Music and Sunday School, but they are also always welcome to remain in the worship service. All children will first go to a fifteen minute time of music together with FPC’s Children’s Music Director in Room 203. At 11 am, the children will be split into two Sunday School classes until 11:45 am.
Pre-K – Grade 2: Godly Play
Pre-K kids through 2nd graders are dismissed to Room 204 for their time of children’s worship. Godly Play and Young Children & Worship encourage curiosity and imagination in experiencing the mystery and joy of God through learning Biblical stories, Christian symbols, and liturgy. Using “I wonder” questions and offering open-ended response time, Godly Play invites children into the stories and provides opportunity to connect the stories with their personal experience. Children continue to respond to the stories through creative crafts and activities. They will engage with 1 ½ years of Old Testament stories and 1 ½ years of New Testament stories.
Grades 3-5: Growing in Grace & Gratitude
Children in 3rd through 5th grade are dismissed to the Youth Room (305) on the 3rd floor after their time of music. Together, they will explore biblical passages through the age-appropriate curriculum called Growing in Grace & Gratitude. The children are welcomed, pray together, hear the day’s story, reflect on God’s grace, and respond in gratitude through engaging crafts and activities.
Our third through fifth graders will additionally have the opportunity to serve as acolytes, lighting the Christ Candle at the start of the worship service. They also have special events throughout the year, such as a lock-in in early November and a service project in April.
Join Us for Family Sundays!
Our Presbyterian theology insists that children fully belong to the people of God and are fully capable of participating in the worship of God. Christian educators also know that “everything the church does teaches” and that being connected to an entire congregation (not just a peer group) is an important part of faith development. With this in mind, the first Sunday of each month, as well as the Sundays of holiday weekends, are designated “Family Sundays.” On those Sundays children in Preschool and older remain in worship for the entire service (and are not dismissed to class.) Our nursery, however, remains open.
If your child has special needs, please contact the FPC staff so that we can help make adjustments so that your child can participate fully in the worship and educational life of the church.
