English Language Program

The English Language Program (ELP) at First Presbyterian Church serves a large number of International adults in Portland who want to improve their English language skills. Volunteers give of their time and energy to lead individuals in becoming informed American citizens, acquiring a better job, increasing communication skills, and gaining an understanding of American culture.  If you’re looking for help with learning English, making connections in Portland, or studying for citizenship, we welcome you to join us at the English Language Center!

A computer lab is available to students during scheduled hours. Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups.  Volunteer tutors are always needed.  Please contact the church office if you might be interested in volunteering.

Volunteering for the English Language Program

Have you ever considered the fact that Global Peacemaking is as simple as showing friendliness to a stranger? The English Language Program (ELP) Staff will be pleased to link you with the stranger, help you to hone friendship skills with persons from another country and culture, provide helpful teaching materials and the space for weekly meetings.

One of our tutors states it this way, “The person from another country may not have much contact with Americans as their work is in the kitchen of a restaurant serving ethnic food. Such people appreciate someone taking a personal interest in their lives, and they in return want to know how plain American people live as compared to the Hollywood portrayal they know.” In a lighter moment she referred to herself as “their American Mom,” a term to which they could relate.  When these students left our program they gave her a beautiful gift addressed to their “American Mom.” Another student met this tutor on two Sunday mornings for worship.  He was not able to follow the order of worship, but he felt at home in our sanctuary and appreciated the beautiful carved woodwork, organ and music. Incidentally, when he moved away he called this tutor on Christmas Day to convey his regards.

Christians in general and Presbyterians in particular are haunted by Jesus’ words, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:6; NRSV)

If you are looking for meaningful volunteer work, look no further.  Tutoring information and applications are available in the church glass office and at the link above.   We can always use additional tutors.   If you have questions, please contact the FPC office at (503) 228-7331.
